Six Week Lenten Study
The Way Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus
Two Class Times Available
Sunday at 11:30 am start date of March 10th
Wednesday at 10 am start date of March 13th
Our theme for Lent is “Walking in the Way”. After Jesus’ resurrection, those who followed him were known as people “who belonged to the Way” and this precedes them being called Christians. The “Way” suggests movement. Jesus never asked people to “worship” him, he invited them to “follow” him. Jesus was known as an itinerate preacher who went from town to town proclaiming the Good News of God’s love for all people. In doing so, Jesus invited people to repent (change their minds) and live in a different way. This way was marked by love, compassion, kindness, forgiveness, concern for and service to others. “Walking in the Way” suggests not only movement but also indicates speed. Walking is not standing still but it also not running. It is steady, consistent movement. Following Jesus is not a race that goes to the swiftest. As we walk, we take in the sights and sounds around us. We pay attention to what is going on and we take time to be present in the situations we encounter. Jesus didn’t race from one town to the next. He walked.
On Sunday mornings in worship we will examine “Walking in the Way” from various perspectives that will deepen our understanding of what it means to follow Jesus. This will be a time to allow Jesus to lead us through the gospel stories.
We are also offering a book study to aid in our walk together. We will use Adam Hamilton’s “The Way, Walking in the Footsteps of Jesus” to guide our study. He uses insights from history, archaeology, and the geography of the Holy Land to better understand what followers of Jesus went through in that time. This will help us think about how we can better follow Jesus in our world today. We will offer two classes, one after church on Sunday mornings and another at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday mornings. The books are $15.00 a piece and couples can share one book if they desire. The price helps us cover the leaders guides and DVDs for each group. Books may be purchased on Sunday mornings at church.
Jesus is more than a Savior to be worshipped. He is a teacher and guide to be followed. Join us in making the 40 days of Lent a transforming experience for you and our church!
